Before Your Treatment
Avoid supplements with blood thinning effects. Supplements that have blood thinning effects include dong quai, fish oil, garlic, ginger, ginkgo biloba, ginseng, green tea, red clover, and vitamin E and should be discontinued 7 days prior to getting a cosmetic tattoo. These supplements may increase bleeding especially if you’re taking blood-thinning medications like warfarin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
Avoid Blood Thinning Medications. A number of medications make your blood less likely to clot (“thinner”) including Aspirin, Warfarin, and NSAIDs (Advil, Exedrin, Motrin, Naproxen, Aleve). These medications should be discontinued 7 days before and 1 day following your appointment. If you need to take something for pain opt for Tylenol (acetaminophen). Coumadin and Plavix also have blood thinning effects but it is not recommended to discontinue them due to their medical necessity. You should be aware of the increased risk of bruising if you’re taking them.
If you suffer from cold sores Valtrex (prescription) or L-lysine (vitamin supplement) is recommended a few days before and after your treatment.
Don’t Drink Alcohol 24 Hours Prior. Alcohol has anti-platelet effects and increases your chances of bruising and bleeding.
No exercise the day of the treatment, this can raise the blood pressure which will increase the risk of bleeding and makes the skin more sensitive.
No caffeine the day of treatment (tea, coffee and carbonated drinks), again this can increase the blood pressure.
If booked in for SPMU Lip Treatment exfoliate your lips with your toothbrush a few days before and moisturise with a quality lip balm.
After Your Treatment
If you are experiencing a large amount of swelling, you can apply ice the treatment area. Applying ice following your procedure also helps to prevent bruising from occurring. A bag of frozen peas works nicely to keep the area cool. Make sure there is a clean cloth barrier between the lips and the ice.
Prop With a Pillow. When going to bed the evening of your treatment, use an extra pillow to keep your head elevated. This will help to reduce swelling
No Exercise for 10 days. Exercise is great for your health and well-being but is not advised following your cosmetic treatment. Physical activity increases your heart rate, blood pressure and blood flow. Minimal blood flow allows damaged capillaries to repair faster. Sweat can also interfere with the healing process. For this reason I try to have clients avoid exercise for 10 days post treatment if possible.
Keep the area dry for 10 days, if you accidently get this area wet please dab dry with a clean piece of tissue.
Pay attention when applying your makeup making sure you do not touch the tattooed area. You do not want the risk the chance of infection.
When removing making use cleanser & toner or face wipes.
If having SPMU Eye Treatment avoid any eye makeup for 10 days
If having SPMU Lip treatment avoid spicy, citrus or salting foods for 10 days, drink through a straw and moisturise regularly.
If having powder brows or Lip treatment wipe the area every 30-40 min to wipe away the lymph fluid to reduce the amount of scabbing.
If having brow treatment you will be given a sachet of A&D ointment. This is to be used on the third day and not before. If no scabs, do not use. If light scabs (very flaky) use once a day. If heavy scabs (lumpy and bumpy) use twice a day.
